FormulaCare i-2010

A unique and brand new style of exhibition was held held in Manila on the 17th and 18th March The event was the forerunner of a unique technology transfer designed to assist formulators in the Asean region and judging by the comments of the visitors it has achieved its objective. “FormulaCare 2010 is a clinic to cure your formulation headaches” These words from a very experienced formulator in the region. “Not enough workshops to attend I would have liked more workshops and more time to attend them all “ says Kartika Martha Lisa, R&D from PT. Pusaka Tradisi from Indonesia even though the show had 17 workshops running concurrently over 2 days. Kartiki was particularly impressed with the Cognis workshop where she said she received a very technical briefing before she started the laboratory workshop. During the workshop she said that Cognis showed her two ways of manufacturing a BB cream. “In her words no one has ever spent that time and effort to explain how to formulate before”. Piyaphak Hiranras , R&D, Greater Pharma Co. Ltd, Bangkok, Thailand was similarly impressed with the event. Both formulators stated they needed more time to visit the stands and do more training. Anh Lam Thoai R&D Rohto Mentholatum Vietnam stated she would not normally get an opportunity to attend an event like this.

The workshops proved to be an essential part of the overall mix of the event. Many exhibitors stated the workshops were the way forward for them to meet with the formulators and explain their technology and new product launches. Yeah-Young Baek from Cognis understood the concept well and located the Cognis stand at the back of the hall near the workshops were she was able to capture the busy traffic area of the formulators moving from one workshop to the other. Exhibitors walked away with a list of new contacts from many different companies as well as real sales and new project opportunities with the attendees.

Many formulators will be surveyed over the next few weeks to identify workshop topics they wish to have training on. Road shows for the year will take place from August 2010 onwards commencing in Malaysia and Indonesia. These road shows will help formulators understand basic technology as well as learn about some of the workshops they have requested to be organized for next years event in Jakarta.

Officials invited to this informal get together were the Honorable Alexander Padilla Undersecretary to the Department of Health and Director Nazarita Tacandong of the Bureau of Food and Drugs

Both VIP’s were impressed with the concept of FormulaCare and asked if they could send laboratory staff from the government laboratories to attend the workshops

The Department of Health and the Department of Food and Drugs are very important in the Cosmetic Industry in Philippines as they have a large say in rules and regulations as well as the recent Asean Cosmetic Directive (Harmonization of regulations in Asean) Along with these VIPs were the President of the Philippines Society for Cosmetic Science (PSCS) Evelyn Fontanilla and the President for the The Chamber of Cosmetics Industry of the Philippines (CCIP) Mr. Roy Comagon as well as Jessica Plana Treasurer for the Asean Cosmetics Association (ACA)

Workshops

Formulators found the workshops varied and had plenty of hands on chances to formulate. Typically the workshop would commence with a brief overview of the technology and aim of the lab work, this would be followed up with hands on demonstration as well as formulating for themselves. Many questions were asked, as manufacturing techniques and equipment are not easy to duplicate in every lab and manufacturing site. At the end of the sessions samples were taken away and a summary was given. Some of the workshops followed through the sample formulations that featured in the formulary /show guide. This handy booklet proved to be a huge hit with attendees. All attendees who registered before the 31st January also received a free metal spatula to use in their laboratory sponsored by FormulaCare as a memento of the event.

If you missed the event this year don’t miss next years event in Jakarta, which will have even more workshops available.
