How to revive W/0 emulsion interest from the formulator and consumer perspective
by Seppic
Emulsions are the most widely used carrier as it allows the delivery of all types of actives: hydrophilic either lipophilic to the skin while providing a wide range of texture. Anyway, the emulsion type itself, Water in Oil (W/O) or Oil in Water (O/W), could also influence the emulsion activity. For instance, it is known for years that Water in Oil emulsions are preferable vehicle for dry skin due to their ability to create a lipid film at the surface of the skin thus reducing the transepidermal water loss. Another advantage is that W/O emulsions can’t be washed by water alone thus providing better intrinsic water or sweat resistance than O/W emulsion.
However, despite their potential use, such emulsions have found only limited applications on the market for two main reasons: firstly, W/O emulsions are more difficult to stabilize and more difficult to manufacture than O/W emulsions and secondly the consumers dislike the skin feel of such formulations judged as difficult to spread, too greasy with a sticky afterfeel.
The purpose of this presentation is to investigate some solutions to overcome these drawbacks in order to keep only the benefits of this continuous oily phase. We will demonstrate in particular the efficiency of a new liquid Water in Oil surfactant to stabilize emulsions without the need of co-emulsifiers or high amounts of wax. We will also disclose a new W/O technology with an easy, cold process requiring a low energy input.
Another purpose will be to demonstrate the ability to change dramatically the sensory perception of W/O emulsions to provide fresh and light skin feel to revive the customer interest. |
